Introduction

Cochin International Language Academy (CILA) is a prestigious institution accredited by Trinity College, London, to offer English teacher training courses. Over the years, we have gained extensive expertise in teaching English to healthcare professionals.

Our unique strength lies in having a dually qualified Nurse and English Language Teacher serving as both the Director of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and the Director of Nursing and Care. This ensures high-quality supervision for both English language teacher training and nursing and care courses.

The Care Assistant Course at CILA is provided in collaboration with a leading UK-based care certificate provider. Upon successful completion, candidates will receive a certificate recognized in the UK, enhancing their employability as care assistants.

Care Assistant Course

Each course runs for 12 weeks with a maximum of 20 students per batch. Practical training is a key component, with students gaining hands-on experience in local clinics and nursing homes. Training includes the use of essential healthcare equipment, such as hoists, to familiarize students with real-world caregiving scenarios.

Care Assistant Trainers

  • Registered nurses with expertise in nursing education will conduct the training.
  • All trainers are trained to teach the UK Care Certificate (Theory) course.
  • Trainers will have opportunities to enhance their assessment skills through the UK-based company providing the Care Certificate.
  • Dr. Helen Macilwaine, a UK-qualified nurse with a Ph.D. in Nursing, will oversee the course. With experience as a nurse and Nursing Superintendent in multiple countries, including the USA, she ensures the highest standards of education and training.

Structure of the Course

The program consists of three modules, each lasting four weeks. Candidates will be assessed and enrolled in the modules they require.

Module 1: English Language (4 Weeks)

Candidates' suitability will be assessed through a face-to-face interview. The course focuses on Speaking and Listening skills, ensuring candidates reach a sufficient standard to communicate effectively in healthcare settings. Training will be conducted by CILA’s expert English language instructors.

Module 2: Care Certificate (4 Weeks)

This module is delivered in partnership with a UK-based provider and covers the 15 standards required for safe caregiving. Each standard will be taught through both theory and practice, followed by an online test. Upon completion, candidates will receive the UK Care Certificate (Theory).

Module 3: Practical Training (4 Weeks)

This module introduces candidates to essential caregiving procedures, such as moving and handling patients and infection control measures. It includes practical training sessions and placements in local healthcare facilities to ensure real-world exposure and hands-on learning.

Course Completion

Upon successful completion of all modules, candidates will receive:

  • An End-of-Course Certificate from CILA.
